Eleven laboratories participated in an inter-laboratory study to determine the precision of AASHTO T 303, The Test Method for Accelerated Detection of Potentially Deleterious Expansion of Mortar Bars due to Alkali Silica Reaction.
The Indiana Department of Transportation recently studied the use of the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) correction factor in the New Hampshire Department of Transportation's water-to-cement ratio formula. This correction factor accounts for the amount of coarse aggregate in a sample. Results show that with proper sampling techniques and applications of the correction factor, the microwave oven method gives a water-to-cement ratio with a level of accuracy better than 0.01.
In order to facilitate standardization and improvements, FHWA proposes several activities.
Due to potential health and environmental impact from using chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, the FHWA Central Federal Lands Highway Division's Central Laboratory sought alternative solvents for laboratory work in 1998.
