ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH NEEDS CONFERENCE

November 14-16, 1996

Purpose:
bullet To encourage:
bullet more environmental research
bullet effective partnerships in conducting this research
bullet To aid in the establishment of national priorities for environmental research in transportation for the next several years
bullet To assist the Office of Environment and Planning of FHWA in the development of their long range (3-5 year) strategic environmental research program

The participants generated 96 detailed problem statements in twelve topic areas.

bullet wildlife & ecosystems,
bullet social & economic impacts,
bullet cultural resources,
bullet air quality,
bullet water quality & hydrology,
bullet noise,
bullet aesthetics & visual quality,
bullethazardous waste,
bulletenergy conservation/alternative fuels & global climate change,
bulletenvironmental review process, and
bulletoperations & maintenance.
Sponsored by:
bullet the Transportation Research Board,
bullet the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) at North Carolina State,
bullet the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA), and
bullet the Federal Transit Authority (FTA).
Attended by 135 participants from:
bullet State departments of transportation,
bullet State environmental agencies,
bullet regional and local governmental agencies,
bullet university and research institutes,
bullet private non-profit environmental organizations,
bullet the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO),
bullet the Environmental Protection Agency, and
bullet three additional Federal agencies

The conference proceedings have been published by the TRB in March 1997 as Circular Number 469. The document has been provided to all conference participants and is being shared with state transportation agencies, environmental research groups, universities and other partners.
