National Concrete Pavement Research Projects

The Concrete Pavement Technology Program (CPTP) is a national program of research, development, and technology transfer that operates within the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The focus of the program is on implementing improved methods of designing, constructing, evaluating, and rehabilitating portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements to promote cost-effective designs and long-term performance for federal-aid highways.

FHWA has been committed to maintaining and funding a strong research and development (R&D) program to improve concrete pavement performance. During the late 1990s, with funding support from the TEA-21 bill, FHWA began consolidating its overall concrete pavement R&D program under the CPTP umbrella in partnership with the State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), industry, and academia.

Four additional concrete research initiatives are currently under way, made possible through TEA-21 earmarked funding:

• Silica fume research - Cooperative agreement with the Silica Fume Association
• Lithium
• Iowa State University National Concrete Pavement Technology Center
  • Research Projects Under ISU Cooperative Agreement (TEA-21 funding)
  • Research Project Under ISU Cooperative Agreement (SAFETEA-LU funding)
• American Concrete Institute - cooperative agreement to develop and conduct training course on alkali-silica reactivity
