Maps of New Business Locations (1995-2001)

The maps that follow use data from InfoUSA's "Select Phone" product to show the locations of manufacturing, distribution and non-consumer service businesses within local communities. The "push pins" show the locations of businesses present in 1995 while the "flags" show the locations of new businesses present in 2001 but not in 1995.

These maps were designed to show, at a community-wide level, the locations of basic industries and business support industries. They exclude gasoline and auto service stations, lodging, restaurants and retail activities, in part because the large number and clustering of such businesses made the maps for larger communities difficult to decipher. As a result of this focus on a subset of businesses, these maps do not show all of the activities occurring at highway interchanges. Since they do not include all businesses, counts of the push pins and flags will also not match to the total counts of all businesses reported by the US Dept. of Commerce's Zip Code Business Patterns (shown in Table 4.1).

The maps provided here correspond to the communities profiled or referenced in Section 3.2 with a few exceptions. Jamestown, the only major city in the region, is not mapped because the large scale of the city and large number of businesses made this form of presentation unreadable. Alfred, Finley Lake and Poland are also not included because they had no business changes to be shown.
