Distributed with this memorandum is a user friendly, menu driven program, DRIVEN 1.0 and accompanying user's manual (FHWA-SA-98-074). The DRIVEN program is used to estimate the ultimate vertical static capacity of piles as well as to create an input file for the driveability analysis option of the GRLWEAP computer program. The DRIVEN program will be of interest to geotechnical and structural engineers, and engineering geologists involved in the review, analysis, and design pile foundations.

The DRIVEN program is an upgrade of the existing FHWA computer program, "SPILE 2.0". The upgrade takes the program from a a basic analysis tool to an efficient and easy to use design tool. This upgrade is intended to increase engineering productivity while enhancing design quality. To take full advantage of the multi-tasking and utility features of the Microsoft Windows environment, DRIVEN operates in Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

We will be sending one copy of the manual and two 90-mm disks containing the executable program and example files for each regional office, division office, Federal Lands Office, and State department of transportations (DOT). All copies for State DOTs and FHWA division offices are being sent to the regional geotechnical engineers for distribution. Additional copies of the manual for State DOTs are available from the FHWA's Report Center at 301-577-0818 or by fax 301-577-1421. Copies of the manual and program for the public are available from the McTrans Center, by telephone at 352-392-0378 or by fax at 352-392-3224 or PC-TRANS, by telephone at 913-864-5655 or by fax at 913-864-3199.

Questions regarding the subject program and manual may be directed to Ms. Michelle Cribbs of the Bridge Division at 202-366-8792.
