Course Title: Adjudicative Decision Writing

Course Description: Basic Curriculum

A basic-to-intermediate level course for a combined Lands and Minerals audience focusing on:

  • How to write decisions, notices and letters
  • Roles and jurisdiction of the Office of the Solicitor and the Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA). Two question-and- answer sessions, one with a Regional Solicitor and one with an IBLA judge and a docket attorney
  • The mechanics of the appeal process and how to prepare the administrative record
  • Importance of good grammar and writing

Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

  • Write clear, well-reasoned, and logical decisions, notices and letters
  • Know the mechanics of the appeal process
  • Correctly handle protests, appeals, contests, and hearings
  • Establish and maintain the administrative case record
  • Understand the provisions of public land and mineral laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and how to cite Departmental regulations

Target Audience: Realty specialists, land law examiners, legal clerks

Course Title: Mitigation for Homeowners (Independent Study)

Course Number: IS394

Sponsoring Organization: Federal Emergency Management Agency

Course Description: This independent study course is designed for homeowners and small businesses to introduce them to mitigation and assist them in identifying the natural hazards which affect their community; determining the hazards to which they are most vulnerable; determining what potential risks could affect their home during disasters; and determining which mitigation actions they should undertake to reduce the risk of potential damage to their family, home and property from disaster.

Target Audience: Homeowners and small businesses.

Attendance Restrictions: None

Course Length: Independent Study

Course Fee: There are no tuition fees.
