Course Title: Natural Resources Recreation Planning

Course Number: PRLS 531

Course Description: This course examines the origins and evolution of recreation use philosophy and the policies and service of public estate management. Planning for a spectrum of opportunities, from wilderness to developed sites, is discussed, with attention to financial consideration and to sustainable use of cultural and visual resources. (3 credits)

Attendance Restrictions: Government experience recommended

Course Title: Visitor Services: New Directions

Course Number: PRLS 533

Course Description: This course examines the motivation of resource-based recreation participants. Topics include visitors' expectations and perceptions, with emphasis on implication for service, quality, staff training, and other management responsibilities; use and user conflicts and displacement; information and interpretive service; and human and other interpretive service resources. The course is a problem- based learning experience taught in collaborative groups over the Internet. (3 credits)

Target Audience: Administrators, mid-level professionals

Attendance Restrictions: Government experience recommended. Students must have a Pentium computer available with a connection to the Internet and at least Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape 4.0. Regularly scheduled meetings with group members (synchronous Internet chats) are required. Students will be assigned to groups of four on a first-come, first-served basis.
