The Interstate Highway System is near completion. Construction began more than 40 years ago in the 1950s. Many FHWA transportation careers began with the building of this system. Through vision and commitment, these men and women have built a fine reputation for our organization. Today, graduates of our Professional Development Program are seeing their dreams achieved through new challenges.

The 24-month Professional Development Program provides excellent opportunities for participants to learn and experience all areas of engineering, transportation, and planning. The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, signed into law by the President on June 9, 1998, provides for an unprecedented 40 percent increase in federal transportation spending during the 1998 to 2003.
