The Federal Advantage

Travel and Relocation

The government will pay allowable travel and relocation expenses to move participants and their household goods to their first duty station and upon permanent placement from the program. To be eligible for these benefits, an employee must sign an agreement at the time of the move, to remain in the Federal Service for at least one year. Also, during the training program while on detail to developmental assignments, participants will be eligible for subsistence or per diem payments, in addition to their salaries.

Competitive Salary

Participants receive salaries comparable to those paid by other Federal agencies and private industry.

Recognition

The FHWA rewards its outstanding performers with honors and cash awards through its incentive awards programs.

Vacation and Sick Leave

Participants earn from 13 to 26 days of annual leave a year based on length of service, as well as 10 paid holidays. Leave can be used as it is earned. Participants also earn 13 days of sick leave every year, which can be accumulated without limit.

Counseling

The FHWA supports an Employee Counseling and Assistance Program that offers confidential individual and family counseling services.

Health Benefits

Participants have a wide selection of insurance plans, offering a variety of benefits, such as dental coverage, prescription discounts, and eye care services. They can choose quality, affordable healthcare that meets their needs. Single and family plans are available, as well as standard and high options.

Life Insurance

Participants are eligible for a low-cost life insurance program.

Retirement

Participants are covered by an excellent Federal Retirement Plan that is portable to the private sector and includes tax-deferred savings options.

Job Security

We offer stability. Participants will work for the largest employer in the Nation-the Federal Government. By doing so, you will have the opportunity to contribute to one of our most important national resources, the highway transportation system.
