TITLE: Memorandum of Agreement between the Departments of Transportation and Interior for Implementing a Highway Safety Program on Indian Reservations
SUBJECT: Indian Highway Safety Program

PURPOSE OF THE AGREEMENT: Sets forth policies, procedures and responsibilities for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the FHWA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the administration of the Indian Highway Safety Program authorized by 23 USC 402(i). Applications received from interested tribes are screened and approved by the BIA on the basis of need and priority. These projects are included in the IHSP which is submitted annually for approval by FHWA and NHTSA and subsequent transfer of funds to BIA. Programs are approved in Washington and technical assistance is provided by field offices.
