Including the Superpave Mix Design System

National Center for Asphalt Technology

Description of the Course

There are six blocks included in this course:

  1. Sophomore Course - This block consists of two lectures. There are no homework problems included with this block.
    1. Asphalt materials and HMA mix design.
    2. An overview of the steps involved in the construction of an HMA pavement.
  2. Aggregates - This block consists of three lectures. Parts of this block are generic to aggregates, they could be used in a general discussion of aggregates. This block includes homework problems.
    1. General - This is a general presentation on aggregates.
    2. Gradation - This presents gradation procedures and blending.
    3. HMA - Discusses those aggregate requirements associated with HMA.
  3. Asphalt - This block consists of three lectures. This block includes homework problems.
    1. Historical review of asphalt as a material. It includes some history and a presentation of the historical methods for testing of asphalt cement. The goal here is to provide the student with a basis to able to read and interpret the literature associated with asphalt cement testing.
    2. Superpave Binder Testing. This is a presentation of the test procedures that are being used to test asphalt cement using Superpave procedures. The goal is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the test procedures. It is not to make the student a qualified testing of asphalt cement using the Superpave procedures.
    3. Superpave Binder Specification. This is a presentation that covers the Superpave specification and discusses what asphalt cement should be used where and when. The goal is provide the student with a basic understanding of the specification.
  4. HMA Mix Design - This block consists of three lectures. This block includes homework problems.
    1. Historical background - discusses the historical background associated with the design of HMA materials. It includes a discussion of Marshall and Hveem mix design procedures. This lecture is included to provide the student with a background to allow him to understand the literature associated with HMA design and construction.
    2. Volumetrics - volumetric mix design is the backbone of analysis of HMA pavements.
    3. Superpave mix design - this unit provides a complete discussion of Superpave mix design (as it exists in October 1998).
  5. HMA Construction - This block consists of two lectures. This block does not include homework problems.
    1. HMA Plant Operation - the operation of plants. Provides a discussion of the differences between batch and drum plants.
    2. HMA Laydown - this lecture describes hauling, laydown and compaction of HMA mixtures.
  6. HMA background and terms - This block consists of one lecture. The purpose is to provide the instructor with one block that can be used to review definitions and terms used in the HMA industry.
  7. Lab Manual - Included with the course is a lab manual that can used by an instructor for the development and the teaching of lab exercises. It includes an instructor's guide and a student's notebook.
