MEMORANDUM

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Welding Society (AWS) have published new editions of design standards incorporated by reference at 23 CFR 625.4(d).  The new editions are titled:

  • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 9th Edition, 2020
  • AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Structural Welding Code – Steel, 24th Edition, 2020
  • AWS D1.4/D1.4M:2018 Structural Welding Code – Reinforcing Steel, 8th Edition 2018
  • AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5:2020 Bridge Welding Code, 8th Edition, 2020

These design standards were developed through AASHTO and AWS technical committee process, with the cooperation of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the State highway departments.  Pursuant to 23 CFR 625.3(f)(2), FHWA approves the use of these more recent editions of the standards, although their use is not required.  The standards currently incorporated by reference at 23 CFR 625.4(d) continue to be required.
