Both Caltrans and the transportation industry rely on open forums to keep alive a working dialogue on troublesome issues, new technology, and beneficial suggestions which arise during the normal course of business. In addition, it is important for a multitude of trade organizations to speak to Caltrans with one voice, and vice-versa. One group devoted to aggregates, pavements, and related materials issues is the Rock Products Subcommittee. Meeting on a quarterly basis, this subcommittee considers the effects of policy and practices on Caltrans and the aggregate industry. Realizing that active construction is the worst possible place and time to discover and act on troublesome issues, this subcommittee attempts to identify and act on issues which might tend to stall a project under construction. There are no figures available to justify or refute the actions of the Rock Products Subcommittee. However, without this subcommittee, the issues which benefit from open discussion might have no forum.
