Geophysics and Non-Destructive Testing of Drilled Shafts:

Use of both of these technologies by State DOTs across the country has been on the rise for the past few years. In an effort to provide assistance to States and other Transportation Partners, FHWA has completed a number of efforts in this area. These efforts include the following:

  • FHWA has sponsored several conferences, Geophysics 2000, 2002, 2003, on this subject. To see information about these conferences, click here.

  • A report, "Nondestructive Testing for Quality Assurance and Quality Control of Drilled Shafts at State Departments of Transportation", was completed by FHWA-CA Division office in conjunction with California State University - LA (Report No. FHWA-CA-03-001). Document is posted in the DOT Online Publications website. For more information, click here.

  • The Central Federal Lands Highway Division Office of FHWA has developed an online interactive manual entitled "Applications of Geophysical Methods to Highway Related Problems..." Access the document by clicking here.

  • FHWA's Geotechnical Engineering website has a wealth of additional information. This includes publications, working groups, and information about conferences and other national activities. For more information, click here.

Other Transportation Entities are involved in this effort. Click the links below for more information on their websites:
