National Summer Transportation Institute Program

Vision

A diverse, well-qualified workforce for the transportation industry in the 21st century.

Program Objectives

• Provide awareness to middle and high school students on transportation careers.
• Encourage middle and high school students to consider transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits.

Organizational Structure

The NSTI consists for Host Sites, which are the participating colleges and universities throughout the United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

NSTI Program

• Host Site
• Residential or Nonresidential Program
• Middle School (grades 7-9) or High School (grades 9-12)
• Minimum of 15 Participants
• 2-4 Week Program

Host Site Personnel

• Project Director
• Intermodal Advisory Committee
• Staff (e.g., academic program coordinator, residence hall counselor, etc.)

Conducting a STI

The Host Site develops and conducts an STI that focuses on a critical and systematic educational endeavor to explore all aspects of the transportation industry and its role in our society. The STI presents a curriculum that introduces students to the diverse modes of transportation and how transportation plays an integral role in our everyday lives, as well as career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry.

Program Curriculum

An Academic Program that is designed to:

• Expose students to all of the modes of transportation (land, air, water, and the incorporation of safety topics).
• Include activity-based presentations by professionals who work in areas related to the mode being studied and field trips to businesses or government agencies.
• Provide hands-on activities such as laboratory activities, project design, construction and testing that may culminate with student competition.

An Enhancement Program that exposes students to methods and activities, which improve study habits, promote academic achievement, and foster self-awareness.
