During the June 2000 International Scanning Tour on Highway Geometric Design, a U.S. panel of experts assessed design policies and practices in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Germany for possible applications in the United States. The objectives of the scanning tour were to review and document procedures and practices in highway geometric design and context sensitive design (CSD) in several European countries. The tour was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
A 10-member panel has prepared a Report (html version PDF version (2.0 mb)) on significant practices. Panel members included representatives from FHWA, AASHTO, municipalities, and academia. Topics in discussion included CSD procedures and practices, design speed versus anticipated opening speed, design solutions for high-volume rural area highways, roundabouts, and accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.
FHWA Federal Lands Highway joins the pilot states.
