National Scenic Byways Program (NSBP)

Description: The National Scenic Byways Program (NSBP) recognizes roads having outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities. NSBP funding supports projects that manage and protect these roads and improve visitor facilities.

Entities Eligible to Apply for Funding: States and Indian tribes are eligible to apply for funding under the NSBP.

AL Natchez Trace Parkway Rest Area at Colber Ferry This project will construct a visitor rest stop at the Colbert Ferry Site on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The Colbert Ferry Site provides recreational access to the Tennessee River and places to bike, hike, and camp. $148,000
AL Black Warrior River Scenic Byway Pedestrian and Bicycle Trail This project will construct a 12-foot-wide, asphalt-paved, shared-use pedestrian and bicycle trail along the Black Warrior River Scenic Byway in Tuscaloosa. $742,240 
AR Crowley's Ridge Parkway and Great River Road Civil War Heritage Pedestrian Trail This project will provide trail design and construction as well as parking and traffic control improvements for a pedestrian trail that will connect five Civil War heritage sites with the Delta Cultural Center in Helena along the Crowley's Ridge Parkway and the Great River Road byways. It will benefit travelers by providing critical infrastructure improvements and increased walking safety. $402,610
AZ Swift Trail Parkway Signs This project will provide visitors with educational information about the Swift Trail corridor. $241,840
AZ Historic Route 66 Kingman Pedestrian Crossing This project will construct a pedestrian crossing, limit dangerous turning movements, improve signage, and install a pedestrian signal connecting the Powerhouse Visitors Center with Locomotive Park. These improvements will improve pedestrian visibility and will allow better access to these two Route 66 visitor destinations. $267,038 
CA Historic Route 66 Needles to Barstow Corridor Management Plan This project will create a corridor management plan for 153 miles of California Historic Route 66 from Needles to Barstow. $152,300
CA Route 1 Byway Bay Trail Extension and Bridge This project will complete project development and design for construction of a segment of the Byway Bay Trail pedestrian and bike path, including a bridge over Morro Creek and improvements to beach access from the byway. $220,000 
CA Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan Update This project will update and consolidate two state corridor management plans into a single, integrated plan for the entire Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway that includes a three-year action plan of priority initiatives. $39,299

CO Colorado Welcome Center in Trinidad The project will provide structural, functional, and safety upgrades to the Colorado Welcome Center including the addition of accessible restroom facilities and entrances, bicycle racks, and fencing. $280,904
CO Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway High Park Road Safety Fencing This project will construct 10 miles of fencing to keep cattle off the roadway. The traffic on this route has increased 40% since designation of the byway and cattle in the roadway has been a significant safety issue. $65,600
CO Conservation and Development Planning along Colorado's Byways This project will produce development plans for three Colorado byways, perform conservation planning on eight byways, and develop materials that showcase the relationship between byways, land conservation, and economic development. The project will conserve private land and water resources that protect the visual, ecological, and economic integrity of the byway. $462,000
CO Los Caminos Antiguos Directional Signage This project will provide new signs at key locations along the byway that provide directional information. $157,000

DE Route 9 Coastal Heritage Byway Planning and Design of a Bicycle/Pedestrian Connector This project will fund planning and design for a bicycle and pedestrian facility in Delaware City adjacent to the byway that will include an asphalt trail along the easternmost section the Delaware City Branch Canal and a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge. $240,000
FL Big Bend Scenic Byway Accessibility Planning This project will produce a Big Bend Scenic Byway Accessibility Report and Implementation Plan that meets corridor management plan goals for universal access to the 220-mile byway. $125,982

HI Hawaii Scenic Byways Statewide Signage and Wayfinding This project will design, manufacture and install directional and byway identification signage throughout its four state byways on Hawaii and Kauai islands. Signage will be located at entry, exit, and other beneficial points along the byway that will give travelers a safer means of navigating the roads. $78,000
IA Iowa Great River Road National Scenic Byway Signage This project will install 738 byway route guide and entrance signs along the 328-mile Iowa Great River Road, which will provide travelers with a reliable wayfinding system that uses the official graphic of the 10-State Great River Road. $346,160
IA Great River Road and Driftless Area Byway Visitor Center This project will develop a new visitor center with traveler amenities including parking, sidewalks and restrooms on the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, overlooking the Mississippi River Valley at Lansing, Iowa. $1,361,400

ID Payette River Scenic Byway Rotary Park Rest Area Improvements This project will rehabilitate a rest area adjacent to the Payette River National Scenic Byway in McCall. The scope of work includes new accessible paths, storm water facilities, lighting, and paving. Amenities for users include access to public restrooms, beach, swimming area, playground, picnic area, recycling/trash bins, and bike path system, as well as beautiful mountain and lake views. $57,750 
ID Teton Scenic Byway Rest Area This project will construct a visitor rest area in Victor on a city-owned site and will provide travelers with parking, restrooms, and other facilities. $383,923

IL Ohio River Scenic Byway Fluorspar Miners Memorial in Rosiclare This project will build a memorial to commemorate a part of American history that directly influenced the regulations of the 1977 Federal Mine Safety & Health Act and pay tribute to all miners and their families. $167,148

MN Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan Development This project will develop a corridor management plan for the Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway in Minnesota, which will protect resources and promote sustainable growth along the route. $37,600 
MN Edge of the Wilderness Bigfork Trail This project will construct a multiuse trail along the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway in Bigfork, Minnesota. NH North Country Scenic Byway Loops Corridor Management Planning This project will develop locally supported corridor management plans for the Woodlands Heritage Trail and the Moose Path Trail, two State scenic byways. The project will identify resources and develop strategies to protect and enhance the intrinsic qualities of the byways, benefit the traveler, increase visitors to the region, and revitalize the local economy. $54,156

NV Kyle Canyon Road Scenic Byway Bike Lane and Shoulder Improvements This project will widen a 9.3 mile portion of the Kyle Canyon Road Scenic Byway to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and provide better parking and emergency access during peak periods. $1,000,000
NY New York State Scenic Byways Byway Identification Signs This project will install signs along nine designated byways across New York to help byway travelers more safely navigate the routes. $200,000

NY Great Lakes Seaway Trail Niagara River Waterfront Multi-Use Trail This project will install a multi-use trail located along the Great Lakes Seaway Trail and Niagara River in the Town of Wheatfield. $1,167,300
OH Heritage Corridors of Bath Ghent Wayside This project will construct a visitor wayside , including a gravel drive, parking area, bike rack, information kiosk, shelter, and restroom. A trail loop from the parking area to North Fork Creek, with roadside trail access to Ghent, will also be constructed. $150,608
OH Historic National Road Eastern Gateway Signage This project will construct an eastern gateway sign for the Historic National Road in Ohio at the I-70 tourist welcome center which will encourage more travelers to use the byway and explore its many attractions and historical sites. $8,000
OK Osage Nation Heritage Trail Comprehensive Gateway and Visitor Signage This project will install signs at the Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway gateways and create a system of 30 additional wayfinding signs along the byway. $389,000
OK Seminole Nation Byway Corridor Management Plan The project will determine the location and boundaries of the Seminole Nation byway and develop a phased plan for a byway facility to include a travel center, traveler shelters, and stop locations. $116,065 
OR Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway Latourell Falls Access Restoration This project will improve safety for byway travelers by replacing seven trail bridges, restoring and re-routing 2.25 miles of trail, and installing retaining walls. $618,590
OR Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway Undercrossing, Trailhead, and Trail Connectors This project will construct a bicycle and pedestrian undercrossing that will provide safe access under the byway and complete key connections to a biking and hiking trail network as well as construct a new nearby trailhead with parking, interpretation, and trail connectors. $854,320

SD Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway Roadside Safety Improvements Near Hood Tunnel The project will construct barriers along the outside lane of a section of South Dakota Route 87 to prevent accidents and widen shoulders in each direction to improve safety for bicyclists using this route. $1,321,644
SD Spearfish Canyon Byway Long Valley Wayside Improvements This project will construct pedestrian paths and expand parking facilities. $100,000 
TN Tennessee River Trail Scenic Byway Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan This project will create a bicycle and pedestrian master plan along the Tennessee River Trail Scenic Byway that addresses byway safety improvements and identifies roadside enhancement needs. $500,000

VT The Shires of Vermont Byway Signage and Kiosks This project will install trail signs, interpretive panels, and informational kiosks to provide wayfinging information, interpretation and information to help keep travelers on the byway. $62,224

WA Chinook Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan Update This project will update the corridor management plan for the entire 86 miles of the Chinook Byway. $59,495
WA North Cascades Scenic Highway Mazama Lucky Jim Viewshed Protection The project will protect and conserve scenic views from the byway near the gateway community of Mazama, Washington which serves as a gateway for travelers. $237,496
WA Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway Visitor Center This project will fund the construction of a new visitor center at the northern gateway to the byway at Helen McCabe Park. $796,174
WA Pacific Coast Scenic Byway Skokomish Tribal Cultural Rest Area The project will improve safety and access by providing visitor parking and constructing an accessible shelter. $360,550
WI Door County Coastal Byway Ridges Sancturary Trail and Interpretation This project will provide an accessible trail and boardwalk with waysides and facilities along the Door County Coastal Byway. $554,900
WI Great River Road Mississippi River Overlook Land Acquisition This project includes purchasing a 0.21 acre property adjacent to Lake Onalaska to construct an overlook $120,000
WV Elk River Scenic Byway Identification Signage Project This project will design, purchase, and install approximately 40 wayfinding signs along the Elk River Scenic Byway to promote safe travel along the route. $16,000
WY Beartooth Highway All-American Road Study This project will assess the Beartooth Highway, including the impact on its gateway communities of Cody, Wyoming, and Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana and provide data that will assist in identifying short-term and long-range maintenance, construction and safety projects along the Highway. $57,406
