PLS HELP ME SEND THE IMPORTANCE OF STACKING

Subject: RE: geophysics

In seismic surveys, stacking is the process of adding together traces from different records that have a common reflection point. The general idea is that signals from noise should be averaged out and signals from true reflections should be enhanced. It is one means used to improve the data quality.

Stacking the signals in a seismic survey is not always needed. The purpose of stacking the signals is to improve the signal to noise ratio or to increase the clearity of the signal recieved from the source. If the signal is very noisy, stack the signal. If the signals are clear there is no need to stack. Generally this can be done in the seismograph however once the signal is stacked you can not unstack it. Some processing software has the capability to stack several signals after they are collected.
