Our firm is currently in the preliminary design phase for several bridge in SE Ohio for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Several of the bridge sites are located over abandoned coal mine voids some 50 to 80 ft below the surface. Overburden is generally shale and sandstone. Geotechnical consultant has reccomended double cased drilled shafts bearing below the bottom of the voids, Total depth 90 to 110'. We are evaluating a series of alternatives and would like to obtain relevant cost data. The proposed shafts will be very costly and will have an effect on the remaining structure design. Additionally suggested alternative foundation strategies would be welcome.

We normally grout the mine voids with a saturation grouting program when the cover over the old mine workings is less than 100'. The structure can then use spread footings on rock. The costs are about $120/cy for concrete and $100/cy for grout. The air rotary drilling comes in at about $10/lf.
