Water Quality Activities

An overview of the major environmental water quality regulations as they relate to highway stormwater runoff will be presented. The topics will include: National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL), and Class V Injection Wells.

This presentation will also provide an overview of FHWA's program of water quality research. It will include a summary of the various major research projects in the area of water quality and where additional information can be obtained. The areas of research include the continued study of water quality associated with highway stormwater runoff, examining the runoff constituents, the monitoring equipment, and the best management practices available to mitigate the impacts of highway stormwater runoff.
