Photo Contest Winners - Most Disastrous Bridge

Submitted by: Curtis Matsuda of Hawaii Department of Transportation
Subject: Roadway and Sectional views of Waikoko Stream Bridge, on the island of Kauai. The existing bridge originally collapsed in 1949 due to a severe tsunami. To quickly open the road to traffic (the only access at that time), Highway Personnel immediately backfilled the collapsed portion, and paved a layer of asphalt pavement to match the original grade. Fifty-five years later, nothing has changed except minor repairs to the crm wall and a couple of ac resurfacing. The above photos were taken in April of 2001 and still look the same today.

Side view of bridge collapsed on left side which was backfilled and repaved to original elevation.
