The purpose of this message is to inform you that on Monday, March 15th, Secretary LaHood announced a new US DOT Policy Statement on Bicycle and Pedestrian Accommodation Regulations and Recommendations. The Policy Statement highlights sections from the US Code and Code of Federal Regulations that pertain to walking and bicycling. It also provides some recommended actions that transportation agencies may consider to make walking and bicycling safer and more convenient. The Policy Statement is an expression of DOT leadership's commitment to walking and bicycling, but it does not create new any new requirements for transportation agencies. I wanted to make sure you were aware of the Policy Statement, and ask you to share this with your State and Metropolitan Planning Organization partners. I would encourage you to review the statement and incorporate it into future dialogues on project planning and development. The new Policy Statement can be viewed at www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/bicycle_pedestrian/overview/policy_accom.cfm. The Secretary also has a blog about the Policy Statement at http://fastlane.dot.gov/2010/03/my-view-from-atop-the-table-at-the-national-bike-summit.html.
