Archaeological Investigation at Site 31BR52, Eden House Site

This project shows how effective planning and cooperation can create and preserve an excellent collection of archaeological artifacts and historic information for future studies. Preliminary research located the 18th century Governor Charles Eden Plantation and cemetery prior to construction of the U.S. 17 bridge over the Chowan River. Using computer-linked remote-sensing techniques and excavation methods, archaeologists discovered an additional 17th century English settlement. Together with historians they have interpreted the site for the public in digitized displays on the Internet and through informative lectures. Through their combined cooperation, coordination, and public involvement with an on-site open house and exhibit of the artifacts, this project has boosted local enthusiasm for heritage tourism along with preserving historical data for future generations.
