For Excellence in Historical Resources:
Going-To-The-Sun Road, Logan Pass Section, Glacier National Park
Western Federal Lands Highway Division, FHWA
Glacier National Park
National Park Service, Denver Center
This important historical site is considered a working transportation
museum in Glacier National Park. The original design and construction
of the Going-To-The-Sun Road blended civil engineering and landscape architecture
and provided vistas from which to see the natural and cultural beauty
of the park. The road possesses such extraordinary integrity it was designated
a National Historic Landmark; however, it was in need of major rehabilitation.
Western Federal Lands Highway Division, in partnership with the National
Park Service and other cultural resource agencies, focused on rehabilitating
Logan Pass by correcting the physical deterioration, reducing safety hazards,
correcting operational problems, and accommodating public transportation.
This was all done without damaging the historic character of the road.
Workers used compatible rehabilitation methods and modern engineering
techniques, such as repositioning the drainage system, applying new retaining
wall concepts using the old stone, and imbedding a cable tracking system
to electronically guide snow-removal trucks away from roadside structures.
This project is an excellent example of how partnering agencies can combine
their strengths, focus their efforts, and create solutions to restore
and protect an important historical resource.
