For Excellence in Community Livability:
Long Beach Bikestation
Long Beach Bikestation
The Bikestation is more than just a public transit facility; it is a
community hub for bicycle advocacy, transit information, and community
events. The staffed facility is strategically located on the First Street
Transit Mall, and offers bicyclists free, secure parking; repairs; and
other amenities. The station's architecture and design create a dynamic
sense of place that serves bus and Metro rail riders, tourists, visitors,
and pedestrians along the downtown's Promenade. This project has logged
some 35,000 one-way bicycle trips since its opening in March 1996. The
Long Beach Bikestation is recognized for promoting a sense of community
by providing convenient amenities and a gathering place, which encourages
the use of intermodal transportation.
