For Excellence in Non-Motorized Transportation:
New York City Bicycle Network Development Program
Bicycle Master Plan and Map
New York City Department of City Planning
New York City Department of Transportation
This program has coordinated and produced two useful publications to
improve conditions for cyclists in New York City and further encourages
the use of the bicycle for both recreation and transportation. The New
York City Bicycle Master Plan sets forth guidelines to be utilized by
engineers, designers, politicians, and others for incorporating the planning,
design, and construction of bike facilities in major transportation infrastructure
improvement projects. A primary goal of the plan was to encourage and
plan for the purposeful growth of cycling as a percentage of the total
mix of available transportation choices in New York City. This program
also developed borough-specific New York Cycling Maps which provide information
on routes, access to facilities, and other detailed information on bicycle
destinations. Both of these products have encouraged and promoted the
use of bicycles while reducing the levels of air and noise pollution,
encouraging economic development, and providing recreational opportunities.
