The Washington State Department of Transportation Olympic Region Native Plant Salvage Program is a partnership effort between Washington State Department of Transportation personnel, state-coordinated employment programs, local environmental organizations, and volunteers. Plants are salvaged from roadside maintenance areas, taken to a holding area, placed in pots or mulch, and kept until they are needed for scenic landscaping, mitigation, or site restoration. Surplus plants are donated to local communities and tribes to use in their public areas. The plant salvage work provides low maintenance costs for the areas landscaped with native plantings. This program is a working example of practicing sound ecological principles of rescue, reuse, and restoration, while caring for the highway rights-of-way.
