Ventura County Transportation Commission
Working from a transit study, the Ventura County Transportation Commission took the lead in developing several user-friendly buses and "smart" transit shuttles, now known as the Ventura Intercity Service Transportation Authority or VISTA. Through grassroots communication and support by the local cities, a transit system was developed that links all city-run services and timed transfers between local fixed routes and commuter rail services. The system, which has received widespread publicity, provides improved access to various activity centers throughout the county. The VISTA system has improved the liveability of the county by promoting the reduction of emissions through the use of the transit service. This partnership and willingness of various jurisdictions to invest their time and money into solutions to air quality problems that extend beyond their municipal boundaries prove that a coordinated commitment can make transit work.
