A recently completed Transportation Enhancement project in Indianapolis is an example of how communities can make transportation improvements and provide for aesthetic amenities such as landscaped islands and pedestrian-friendly walkways. The downtown improvement project balanced community values with transportation development. The historic corridor is becoming a destination rather than a route through town. The design team members focused their attention on creating an appealing atmosphere and sense of community in this historic area surrounded by family owned businesses and local neighborhoods. At the same time they improved traffic conditions throughout the downtown corridor.
