This multi-use transportation trail is approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) long and serves as a backbone of the regional trail system, connecting Traverse City with the rural area of Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties. The path is located within a railroad right-of-way owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The trail travels adjacent to the Traverse City State Park and provides users with many safe recreational opportunities and access to the downtown area. Through local community action, the trail has brought economic benefits to local businesses with a path for recreation, commuting, shopping, and exercise. The natural setting of the trail demonstrates how environmental enhancement and transportation can be interrelated.
