The cooperative efforts of the public, resource agencies, highway agencies, consultants, and contractors have led to an effective integration of environmental concerns into project planning and development and enhancement of the natural environment. The use of numerous coordination meetings and field reviews facilitated the identification of suitable wetland and habitat mitigation sites, despite numerous physical and biological barriers. The project team placed a high priority on public input throughout the process and used cost-effective measures to control project costs while preserving environmental values. The success of this project is demonstrated by the use of these protected wetland sites for open air classrooms, to be enjoyed and studied by current and future generations.
