The America's Treeways Program is a partnership effort between volunteer
organizations and government agencies. Since the spring of 1992, the Virginia
Department of Transportation has assisted with the planting of 35,000 trees under
the program. The Roadside Development Team located in Northern Virginia has led
VDOT's effort. On Interstate 66 in Fairfax, Virginia, the development team
experimented with innovative landscaping techniques to enhance the survival rate
of plantings located in heavily compacted subsoil. The America's Treeways
Program is an example of how citizens and government working together can
recreate a healthy natural environment that benefits everyone.
