The Maryland SHA wins the centerspread of the spring issue of Greener Roadsides, two years in a row! Missouri was on their heels with two first place wins. Caltrans' first place win in Category III deprived Missouri of a third first place. An Honorable Mention page will be given to Idaho DOT for their native planting/erosion control work on arid, steep slopes. Although their photos could not reflect the difficulty or success of their work, we would like to learn more about it. The "coveted" Editor's Choice award goes to the submission of a non-winning State, Virginia, whose photos of their I-295 mitigation site must be seen along with the details of this endangered species reintroduction project. Their level of project difficulty requires that their story be told.
Other important stories remain to be told through words and photos. Please submit your photos to the Editor before November 1, 2001. Rules may be found on our website: www.fhwa.dot.gov/roadsides. Submit to Editor's Minnesota office, please. Winners will be notified in December of 2001. Their story will be told in the 2002 Greener Roadsides spring issue, and their awards will be presented by their FHWA Division office.
The April edition of Greener Roadsides is filled with colorful first-rate roadside photos that represent all the categories or goals FHWA hopes to achieve on our nation's rights-of-way.
We thank the judges: Liz Fischer (chair), Robert Black, Dee Gallo, Marsha Bayer, Lori Irving, and Janis Gramatins from FHWA headquarters. They love this job and we are grateful for their efforts. |
