The purpose of this memorandum is to request your assistance in encouraging the division office staff with Recreational Trails Program (RTP) responsibilities and the State Trail Administrators, as appropriate, to attend the annual State Trail Administrators Training Workshop, in Newark, Delaware, on September 20-22, 2005.

Delaware State Parks is hosting a unique opportunity for training in trail construction and maintenance techniques. The meeting will take place on September 20. On-the-ground trail training will take place on September 21 with training in the Universal Trail Assessment Process on September 22. Meeting information is at www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/recreational_trails/events/stam_2005/, along with travel and lodging information. Please respond by August 1, 2005.

I recognize the uncertainties regarding our travel budgets this year due to operating under extension legislation. We would appreciate your requesting your staff to contact their respective State RTP administrator to encourage his or her participation in these meetings. We have found this encouragement is helpful in increasing the number of individuals able to participate.

More trail conference information is at www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/recreational_trails/events/rtevents.cfm (updated frequently). The 2006 State Trail Administrators meeting will take place in conjunction with the National Trails Symposium, October 19-26, 2006, in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois (see www.americantrails.org/quad/index.html).

If you have questions about these meetings, please contact Christopher Douwes, Trails and Enhancements Program Manager, at christopher.douwes@dot.gov or 202-366-5013.
