Optional Mobile Workshop: Carson Pass Day Hikes
When: Monday September 17
Time: 12 noon to 4-5 pm including travel time
Starting Point: Mont Bleu Hotel
Hiking options
This field trip will take you to the beautiful alpine country around 8,573 foot Carson Pass where you will hike a short segment of the Pacific Crest Trail, a National Scenic Trail. There will be two options for hikes. Both hikes take in spectacular scenery and the historic Carson Pass discovered and crossed by the Fremont Party in February of 1844. (See maps and photos)
Option 1: An easy hike on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) south from Carson Pass to Frog Lake. This is a simple out and back hike of about 1 mile each way.
Option 2: An easy but longer hike which follows the PCT southward, but leaves the PCT near Frog Lake to continue on to Winnemucca Lake and finally to Woods Lake Trailhead where we will be picked up by our vans. The approximate distance is 4-5 miles.
Preparedness: September can bring a wide variety of weather so be prepared for the more likely warm and sunny, but also possibly wet and cold. Sun screen is necessary regardless of weather. You will need good hiking shoes and clothing including rain gear. A small backpack to carry clothes, water, and snacks is strongly recommended. Hikes start at an altitude of about 8,500 feet with a maximum altitude of about 9,000 feet. If you are particularly sensitive to altitude sickness symptoms, you may not want to go on this trip.
