Wetlands No-Net-Loss Summary Data
GOAL 5: Actively enhance our environment through wise transportation decisions.
PERFORMANCE MEASURE: The FHWA is committed to the achievement of the following in support of this goal:
Achieving "No net loss" of wetlands in conjunction with highway projects as measured by the ratio of acres of wetlands provided as mitigation to the number of wetland acres directly impacted on Federal-aid highway construction projects in each region.
ACCOMPLISHMENT:
Documenting the completion of this Performance Measure was based upon wetland impact and mitigation data gathered from the field offices. The Office of Environment and Planning issued a memorandum requesting the data on June 25, 1997. All Regions responded by September 1 with the data required to document the wetland no-net-less Performance Measure.
The overall results indicated that the no-net-loss performance measure was met on an acreage basis for Fiscal Year 1997. On average, the figures indicate that Federal-aid highway projects provided 2.6 acres of wetland mitigation for each acre of wetland impacted. The following table provides the acreage figures provided by each Region in response to the request from the headquarters office:
