Photo of the Indiana Dunes National LakeshoreThe Federal Lands Highway Program in Indiana.Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was authorized by Congress in 1966 to preserve the complex ecosystems that exist on the dunes along Lake Michigan. The National Lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles along southern Lake Michigan, bordered by Michigan City, Indiana, on the east, and Gary, Indiana, on the west. The area contains beaches, sand dunes, bogs, wetlands, woodland forests, an 1830s French Canadian homestead, and a working 1900-era farm.

Eastern Federal Lands is working to rehabilitate pavement, improve drainage conditions and reconfigure several roads in the area. Improvements will reduce flooding on Beverly Drive and improve sight and safety conditions on the Mt. Baldy Entrance Road. The project will provide for natural resource protection by providing a buffer between vehicle contaminants and the water of the surrounding wetland environment.
