Photo of a National Wildlife RefugeThe Federal Lands Highway Program in Kansas. The Federal Lands Highway Program has been involved in several projects located in Kirwin, Flint Hills, and Quivira National Wildlife Refuges in Kansas. Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) took the lead in designing and constructing these National Wildlife Refuge programmed projects. CFLHD used context-sensitive solutions (including the use of aggregatesurface
roadways to maintain the rural feel of the area) for these low-volume roads to provide a safe, efficient transportation system sensitive to the needs of the refuge visitor and the refuge environment.

These projects provided improved entrance roads, wider and safer parking lots for refuge staff and visitors, improved tour routes, safer entrances to maintenance areas and volunteer residences, and improved roadway drainages. Approximately $1 million of Federal Lands Highway Program funds were used for three construction projects in the Refuges.
