Photo of the Little Beaver RoadThe Federal Lands Highway Program in Michigan. The “Little Beaver Road” within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a 3-mile gravel road, which provides access from County Road H-58 to a small, rustic, drive-in campground and a small boat launch for access to the adjacent Little Beaver Lake. In addition, the road provides access to trailheads that lead into the lakeshore’s backcountry areas, including proposed Beaver Basin Wilderness Area. The road pre-dates the establishment of the National Lakeshore, and was never constructed to accepted standards for the current volume and type of public use; in several places, the road is too narrow to allow for the passage of two vehicles. In one section the road was simply cut into the side of the hill, leaving side edges that are raw and unsightly. The volume and type of public use has increased significantly since the establishment of the National Lakeshore.

Eastern Federal Lands is incorporating context-sensitive solutions to rehabilitate Little Beaver Road. The work involves re-establishing the road base, stabilizing narrow and raw side slopes, widening the road to allow for minimum safe passage of two standard sized vehicles (approximately 18 feet), improving the grade and drainage, replacing existing and installing new culverts and associated drainage structures, and covering the new base with gravel.
