Photo of Newfound Gap RoadThe Federal Lands Highway Program in North Carolina. Newfound Gap Road is a 31-mile principal north-south roadway within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the only roadway that completely traverses the park. It connects the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee, North Carolina, to the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg,Tennessee. In addition to connecting the two communities, it provides access to a campground, fishing, historic sites, and many scenic viewpoints.

Currently, the National Park Service, in partnership with Eastern Federal Lands, is planning to rehabilitate the entire 31 miles of Newfound Gap Road. The first in a series of five projects to accomplish this task is now under construction, and includes 10.6 miles of roadway rehabilitation in North Carolina. The project includes a new roadway pavement structure, culvert reconditioning and replacement, stone masonry work, steel-backed timber guardrail addition and replacement, and pull-out and parking area rehabilitation.
