Photo of the New Mexico State Highway 537The Federal Lands Highway Program in New Mexico. New Mexico State Highway 537 (NM 537), 55.6 miles long, is located in Rio Arriba and Sandoval Counties in northern New Mexico. NM 537, which lies entirely within the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation, traverses northerly from U.S. Highway 550 to Dulce, New Mexico. The Jicarilla Apache Nation has included this route in the Indian Reservation Roads system.

Since the 1980s, the Federal Highway Administration has used Public Lands Highway Discretionary funds for improvements to NM 537 to bring the roadway in compliance with current highway standards. Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) has taken the lead in designing and constructing a series of projects totaling approximately 51 project miles. The projects have included roadway realignments, widening, bridges, and safety improvements. CFLHD has partnered with the Jicarilla Apache Nation and the New Mexico Department of Transportation to make these projects successes and to improve safety for travel through the reservation.
