Photo of the Geotechnical SectionThe Federal Lands Highway Program in Ohio. Two roads providing recreational, commercial, and administrative access to Wayne National Forest were damaged from extremely heavy rainfall from hurricanes Frances and Ivan in August and September of 2004.The Eastern Federal Lands Geotechnical Section provided technical assistance toWayne National Forest by performing the field and subsurface investigation activities associated with four separate landslides along Forest Road 132 and a proposed parking area along LakeVesuvius Road.

The Geotechnical Section also provided assistance with structural repair alternatives for the forest to consider based upon the site conditions and the results of the subsurface investigation. The project involved landslide repair and roadway reconstruction on the roads. Both roads serve large portions of the Ironton Ranger District, and provide recreational, ommercial and administrative access to the forest. The Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Lands (ERFO) Program provided the majority of the funding, while the U.S. Forest Service funded the design and administration costs.
