Kettle Pond Visitor Center located in Charlestown celebrates the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex. Two of the NWR located within the state, Sachuest Point and Ninigret, are very popular sites. Over 250 bird species visit seasonally and many nest on the property, making bird watching and photography popular activities. Sachuest Point NWR is also renowned for fantastic saltwater fishing and the largest winter population of harlequin ducks on the East Coast. Ninigret NWR, named after a Narragansett Indian chief, was used as a Naval Auxiliary landing field during WorldWar II.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, the Town of Middletown, and Eastern Federal Lands agreed to the design and construction work in Sachuest Point and Ninigret. The partners provided funding for resurfacing of the Sachuest Point Road and new entrance lanes into the Second Beach Parking Area, as well as reconstruction of the Ninigret entrance road and parking area, removal of runways, and a new entrance off US Route 1 into Ninigret NWR.
