The Federal Lands Highway Program in
Tennessee. The Foothills Parkway was planned as a 72-mile
scenic road traversing
the northern and western perimeter of Great Smoky Mountains National Park to provide views of the Smoky Mountains from outside the park. When completed, the parkway will extend from the intersection
with Interstate 40 east of Cosby, Tennessee,
to Chilhowee, Tennessee.
The National Park Service has been working in partnership with Eastern Federal Lands to construct the road since the 1960s. Construction of the parkway began in 1960, with the majority of work, in 3 sections totaling 23.4 miles, completed
by 1970. Currently, the emphasis is on the completion of 16.1 mile section, which is topographically difficult area that was designed using a series of up to 9 bridges. Two of the bridges have been constructed, with a third bridge to be completed by the end of 2007. The parkway will provide millions of tourists with breathtaking vistas of the mountains.
