Wisconsin State

A photo of the Little Sand Bay area of Apostle Islands The Federal Lands Highway Program in Wisconsin. Considered by many to be the jewel of Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore comprises 21 islands and 12 square miles of mainland and host a unique blend of cultural and natural resources, in addition to many recreational opportunities. The Little Sand Bay area of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is one of the few areas that can be reached by car, and it is a popular for day trips.

A recently completed project consisted of realigning a two-mile stretch on both Little Sand Bay Road and Shaft Street, constructing a new parking area, overlaying the Visitor Center Loop, and reconstructing Meyers Road. These rehabilitated entryways also provide easier and safer access to the ferry operations that shuffle passengers between the mainland and the numerous islands. Modeled after this successful venture, transportation is a key element of the "First Annual Centennial Strategy for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore," published in August 2007 and completed in conjunction with the National Park Service's 2016 Centennial Initiative.
