To commemorate the new millenium, this year's Garrett A. Morgan Association Trailblazer Awards will focus on Heritage and Horizons: The African-American Legacy and the Challenges of the 21st Century. Helping the Association realize this vision are Dr. Arthur A. Fletcher, veteran Civil Rights activist, and Elizabeth Gorman, a local Honor Roll student.
Former United Negro College Fund Executive Director to Speak at Award Ceremony
Dr. Arthur Fletcher, an advisor to four U.S. presidents and former Executive Director of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), will deliver the keynote address at the 2000 Trailblazer Award presentation.
It was during Dr. Fletcher's tenure that the UNCF coined its signature phrase, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." That memorable statement, along with Dr. Fletcher's guidance, helped the UNCF raise $11.2 million between January 1972 and February 1973.
Prior to joining the UNCF, Dr. Fletcher served as an Assistant Secretary of Labor and was a delegate to the United Nations during the Vietnam era.
In 1990 Dr. Fletcher was appointed chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and served in that capacity until 1993. He continued as a commissioner until 1995. Today, Dr. Fletcher divides his time between speaking engagements and other private sector activities.
