Guidelines for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways (R26)

Challenge

For years, transportation agencies have successfully extended the life of certain types of roads by applying pavement preservation techniques. However, to realize the benefits of these techniques for a broader range of roadways, agencies need a systematic approach that takes into account a variety of road conditions and proper timing of treatments to reduce negative traffic impact.

Solution

SHRP2 has developed a series of guidelines and technical summaries to help transportation agencies match roadway conditions to specific preservation strategies. Two documents, Guidelines for the Preservation of High-Traffic-Volume Roadways and Preservation Approaches for High-Traffic-Volume Roadways, can help transportation agencies identify the best options and the proper timing to apply pavement preservation techniques to a variety of roadway conditions including different traffic volumes.

Benefits

The improved pavement preservation strategies found within SHRP2’s guidelines and technical summaries reduce both the duration of maintenance and rehabilitation projects. Transportation agencies can realize long-term cost savings by increasing pavement service life and extending the timeframe between expensive, large-scale rehabilitation projects.
