The second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) has undertaken more than 100 research projects designed to address critical state and local challenges, such as aging infrastructure, congestion, and safety. The results of this research are now being made available in a series of effective products, called SHRP2 Solutions, that will improve the way transportation professionals plan, operate, and maintain America’s roadways.

About SHRP2

SHRP2 delivers solutions that help transportation professionals save lives, money, and time.

More than 100 research projects have been developed under the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) designed to address critical State and local challenges, such as aging infrastructure, congestion, and safety.  The results of this research are now coming available in a series of effective products, called SHRP2 Solutions, which will improve the way transportation professionals plan, operate, and maintain America’s roadways.

Authorized in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), SHRP2 builds on the success of the first SHRP.  In the 1990s, the first SHRP produced among other innovations, a new technology for addressing snow and ice, and Superpave (SUperior PERforming Asphalt PAVEments)—a process for creating more durable roads.

Through 2015, SHRP2 will continue to launch proven innovations as research and pilot projects are completed. By implementing SHRP2 Solutions, the transportation community will strengthen the highway system more efficiently to serve the Nation through the 21st century.

About SHRP2 Implementation

The SHRP2 Program is a national partnership of key transportation organizations: the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the Transportation Research Board. Together, these partners conduct research and deploy products that will help the transportation community enhance the productivity, boost the efficiency, increase the safety, and improve the reliability of the Nation’s highway system.
