Lesson 4.2.1 Best Practices for Grant Proposals

Learning Objective 2:
Identify best practice grant proposals and demonstrate the ability to review proposals.

Best practices address the components below. Examples of best practices can be found at Examples of Grant Applications.

Grant proposals should show an integration of information included in the Abstract/Project Description, Narrative/Project Summary, Work Plan and Budget

Successful grant applications have a full integration of information in the Abstract/Project Description, Narrative/Project Summary, Work Plan and Budget. A coordinator should be able to review the proposals for these elements and be able to work with the byway group to determine what elements need to be improved prior to submittal.

FHWA has an online NSB Grant Application System that has information about roles, criteria and tutorials for applying for byway grants. This is an important section for coordinators to review.

FHWA also has a section of their website dedicated to grants management.
