Planning Highlights
- A Framework for Travel Demand Management (TDM) in the Transportation Planning Process project's desk reference is designed to help users understand where, how, and when to integrate TDM into the transportation planning process. The reference focused on how TDM relates to key policy objectives that are often included in transportation plans, such as congestion and air quality.
- The Integrating Road Safety into NEPA Analysis: Practitioner's Primer discusses methods to conduct meaningful, quantitative analysis of project safety issues and information on new tools, research, and techniques to improve road safety. The primer was designed for NEPA practitioners who want to identify best practices for analyzing and addressing project safety issues during each stage of the NEPA process. - The Greening Transportation at the Border project began with a workshop in February 2011 with more than 125 individuals attending a workshop to identify opportunities to reduce the environmental and community impacts of congestion in the U.S./Canada and U.S./Mexico border regions.
- The Transportation Project Prioritization and Performance-Based Planning Efforts in Rural and Small Metropolitan Regions report, published in partnership with the National Association of Development Organizations' Research Foundation, provides an overview of the state-of-the-practice in non-metropolitan regional transportation planning and examines rural long-range planning efforts and criteria used to rank regional priority projects.
Program Overview
STEP is a research program authorized in the "Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users". STEP funds can be awarded to state/local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, universities, federal agencies, and the private sector.
